What Is Retail Sales Data

Retail sales is the till receipts of a country's shops added up for one month, read as the change from the month before, and it is watched because what people spend is about two-thirds of what the economy makes. This paper shows you the number in five lines; the idea as a high street at closing time with every till emptied into one bag; the retail minute on the euro on 14 August 2026, 8.0 pips on real bars, a quiet minute; the economy as a pie with the shopper as the biggest slice; and the two retail rows on your platform, with and without the car dealers.

Retail sales in five lines

Retail sales is the till receipts of a country's shops, added up for one month. What the market reads is the change from the month before, in percent, and a second version with cars and fuel left out, because those two swing the total for reasons that have nothing to do with the shopper's mood. It lands mid-month for the month before, at 15:30 on the feed's clock in the United States. It is watched because what people spend is about two-thirds of what the economy makes, so the shops are the economy's early warning. On 14 August 2026 the minute moved the euro against the dollar 8.0 pips, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price, and on 16 July 7.6: quiet minutes, larger than the day's ordinary bar and not much more.

A high street at closing time

Picture a high street at closing time, on the last day of the month, with every till emptied into one bag. The coins under each shop are that shop's month, and the bag is the number: food, clothes, furniture, cars, fuel, restaurants, all in together. The market weighs this month's bag against last month's, and reads the change. The second version leaves cars and fuel out of the bag, because a dear month for petrol or a good month for car dealers swings the total without saying anything about whether the shopper is confident, which is the thing the bag is read for.
