What Is the Unemployment Rate Release

The unemployment rate is the share of everyone working or looking for work who are not working, counted by asking households, and it lands on the first Friday at 15:30 on the feed's clock in the same report as the payroll number. This paper shows you the rate in five lines; the rate as a hundred dots with four of them gold; the jobs minute on the euro on 5 June 2026, 16.9 pips on real bars; the two surveys, payslips and doorsteps, that land on one page; and the calendar row on your platform before and after the minute.

The rate in five lines

The unemployment rate is this: of everyone who is either working or looking for work, the share who are not working. It is a share, not a count, and it comes from a survey of about 60,000 households asked what they did last week, not from the payslips that the payroll number is built from. It lands on the first Friday of the month at 15:30 on the feed's clock, in the same report as the payroll count, and it is read in tenths: 4.1 to 4.2 is a rise, and the market sets the tenth against the forecast. On 5 June 2026 the minute moved the euro against the dollar 16.9 pips, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price, and the hour after it ran 44.4.

A hundred people who want work

Here is the rate as a picture. A hundred dots are a hundred people who either have a job or are looking for one; that group is called the labour force. Navy is working, gold is looking and not working, and the rate is the gold dots over all the dots: four of a hundred is 4.0 percent, one more gold dot is 5.0. The hollow dots outside the square are people who are neither working nor looking, the retired, students, people at home, and they are not in the hundred at all, which is why the rate can fall when people stop looking as well as when they find work. The real release moves in tenths of a dot: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3.
