Why Good News Can Push Price Down

A good number can send price the wrong way because the forecast is already in the price and the number is read as the gap to it: 250 thousand jobs after a forecast of 300 is good news and a miss at once. This paper shows you the idea in five lines; a high jump where the bar is the forecast; the jobs minute on the euro on 9 January 2026, up 7.2 pips in the minute and 17.9 below two hours later, on real bars; the number on a number line with the forecast at the middle; and the tooltip on your chart that colours the Actual against the Forecast.

Good news, price down, in five lines

A number that is plainly good can send the price the wrong way, and this is why. The forecast is already in the price before the number lands, so the number is read as the gap to the forecast, not as good or bad on its own: 250 thousand new jobs after a forecast of 300 is good news and a miss at the same time, and the miss is what gets priced. There is also a second move: the first bar is the headline being read, and the hour after is the whole report being read. On 9 January 2026 the euro against the dollar rose 7.2 pips in the minute of the jobs number, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price, reached 16.6 above at the high, and by 17:30 was 17.9 below where the minute began.

A high jump with the bar at the forecast

Picture a high jump. The bar is the forecast, set at 300 before anyone jumped. The jump is the number, 250, a fine jump and far above last month's 180, which is the dashed line below. It still does not clear the bar. The market was not asking whether the jump was good; it had set the bar at what it expected and paid for that already, so a jump under the bar is a disappointment however high it is. The example figures are jobs in thousands, but the picture is the same for any release with a forecast beside it.
