What Priced In Means

Priced in means the price already contains what everyone expects, because the people expecting it have already traded on it, so an event moves the price only by the surprise, what happened minus what was expected. This paper shows you priced in in five lines; the idea as an umbrella that went up on the forecast; a Fed decision the market had already priced, 6.6 pips on the euro on 18 March 2026, beside one it had not, 41.5 pips on 29 July; the menu of expected decisions the market keeps; and the Forecast column on your platform, which is the priced-in number.

Priced in, in five lines

When traders say something is priced in they mean this: the price already contains what everyone expects to happen, because the people expecting it have already bought or sold on that expectation. So when the event lands it moves the price only by the surprise, what happened minus what was expected, and an event that matches the forecast exactly can land and barely move anything. The Forecast column on the calendar is the market's own guess, already traded on. Two Fed decisions show the difference: on 18 March 2026 the decision minute moved the euro against the dollar 6.6 pips, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price; on 29 July, 41.5.

The umbrella is already up

Picture an umbrella that is already up. The rain is the event, the rate cut or the jobs number. The forecast said rain, so the umbrella went up before the first drop, and when the rain arrives nothing changes: the ground underneath is dry, because the rain that was forecast has already been dealt with. Only rain that was not in the forecast gets anyone wet, and in a market that is the surprise, the gap between what landed and what was expected. Priced in is the umbrella; the event is the rain; the surprise is the only water that reaches the price.
