What Is an Interest Rate Decision

An interest rate decision is the scheduled minute on which a central bank sets its policy rate, the rate every other rate in the country leans on, and publishes a statement saying why, with a press conference half an hour later. This paper shows you what is decided, by whom and how often; the idea as the price board beside a town's one well; the two minutes on the euro on 29 July 2026, 41.5 pips at the decision and 21.2 at the press conference, on real bars; what lands, as a dial and a page of words; and the clock on your platform, in which the minute has to be found.

What is decided

A rate decision is the scheduled minute on which a central bank sets the price of its money. What is decided is the policy rate, the rate the bank charges other banks to borrow from it overnight, and every other rate in the country leans on it. A committee of the bank decides, eight times a year in the United States, on a schedule published a year ahead. At the minute the new rate lands with a statement saying why; half an hour later the chair holds a press conference and is questioned. On 29 July 2026 the two minutes moved the euro against the dollar 41.5 pips at 21:00 on the feed's clock, 2:00 in the afternoon in Washington, and 21.2 at 21:30, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price.

The price board at the well

Picture a town with one well and a price board beside it. The keeper sets the price of water, and every jug in the town is filled at that price or not at all; the shops, the farms and the banks all pay it before they set their own prices. The board is changed on eight days a year, at a known hour, and the town gathers at the well on those days. The policy rate is the price on the board, the central bank is the keeper, and a rate decision is the day the board is changed, or, just as important to the town, the day it is not, because the town had guessed.
