What Is an Earnings Report

An earnings report is a company's numbers for one quarter, sales, profit per share and guidance, released after the closing bell and read against the analysts' estimate that is already in the share price. This paper shows you the report in five lines; the closing bell the report waits for; the two bars after the bell on the Nasdaq 100 on 28 January 2026, 164.6 and 125.7 points on real bars; the three numbers as a scoreboard against three guesses; and the Market Watch on your platform after the bell, where the share rows are locked and the index row ticks.

An earnings report in five lines

An earnings report is a company's numbers for one quarter, sales, profit, and what it expects next, published four times a year. It lands after the closing bell, 16:00 in New York, or before the opening one, and it is read against the analysts' estimate, the market's guess, which is already in the share price. For a trader on a contract for difference, a CFD, which is a contract that follows the share price without owning the share, the share gaps at the next open, and when the company is large enough its report moves the whole index that same evening. On 28 January 2026 the Nasdaq 100 ran 164.6 points in the five minutes of the bell and 125.7 in the five after, on a day whose usual bar was 14.7.

The closing bell

Picture the closing bell of the New York exchange, 16:00 there, 23:00 on the feed's clock. The report waits for it: companies release their numbers minutes after the bell, when nobody can trade the share, so that the news lands on a closed market rather than in the middle of one. The index futures and the CFDs on them trade on through the evening, which is why the report's first mark is on the index rather than the share. In season, the six weeks after each quarter ends, several companies ring in on the same bell every evening.
