Why You Move Your Stop Loss

A stop is moved because it was set by one mind, the calm one that wrote the plan, and is watched by another, the one in the trade as it moves. This paper shows you a real euro trade from 17 December 2025 whose stop was moved further away at 13:30 out of fear and up to the buy price at 16:30 out of hope, and what each move did; the idea as goalposts carried during the match; the stop walking on the fifteen-minute chart; the stop as a thermostat nudged by whoever feels cold; and the dragged S/L line on your platform, with the setting that can switch the drag off.

Two moves, two reasons

A stop is moved because it was set by one mind and is watched by another. The euro against the dollar was bought at 1.17166 at 10:15 on 17 December 2025, at 0.40 lot, where 1 pip is 4 dollars, with the plan's stop 25 pips down at 1.16916. At 13:30 the price was 9 pips down and the stop was moved further away, to 1.16816, to give it room. At 16:30 the price was 22 pips up and the stop was moved up to the buy price, so the trade could not lose. At 14:15 the next day the price touched 1.17122 and the trade closed at 1.17166 for nothing; by 15:45 it was at 1.17628, 46 pips up. The first move answered a fear and the second a hope. Neither was in the plan, and the plan was written by the same person.

Moving the goalposts

Picture a goal that has been picked up and carried during the match. The dashed frame is where the plan put it; the solid one is where it stands now; the ball has not moved. Moving the goalposts is an old phrase for changing the rules once the game is under way, and it is exactly what a moved stop is. The trade was planned as a game against one goal, and it is now being played against another, carried there by the same person who is keeping score. It does not feel like cheating from the inside. It feels like adjusting.
