Why You Close Winners Too Early

Winners are closed early because a gain, once it exists, is felt as something that might be lost, and is banked before it can be, whatever the plan said. This paper shows you a real euro trade on 17 December 2025 with a 50-pip target, closed by hand at 15; the idea as a loaf taken out of the oven at fifteen minutes of fifty; the plan's lines and the close on the fifteen-minute chart, including the honest fact that the target was not reached in two days; the trade as a kitchen timer; and the History row on your platform, where the T/P and the close price sit side by side.

The plan and the hand

A winner is closed early because a gain, once it exists, is felt as something that might be lost, and it is banked before it can be. The euro against the dollar was bought at 1.17166 at 10:15 on 17 December 2025, at 0.40 lot, where 1 pip is 4 dollars. The plan set a target 50 pips up at 1.17666, worth 200 dollars, against a stop 25 pips down at 1.16916, a risk of 100. At 16:00 the price reached 1.17316, 15 pips and 60 dollars up, and the hand closed it there. The reason, if asked, is that it might go. The plan asked for 200 and accepted a risk of 100 to get it; the hand took 60 the moment there was 60 to take.

A loaf out of the oven early

Picture an oven set for fifty minutes and a loaf taken out at fifteen. The loaf is pale and it is still bread; nothing was lost by taking it out, and it will be eaten. What the recipe was for was never made, because the door was opened when the kitchen smelled good, which is the earliest moment a loaf can be taken out and called done. Closing a winner early is opening the oven at fifteen minutes. The gain in the account is real and small, and the plan's gain was never given the time it was written for. Nobody who opens the oven early ever finds out what the recipe made.
