Why Crypto Volatility Is Different

Volatility is how far a price moves in a day as a share of the price, and a coin's is different in kind: on three real days in August 2026 bitcoin moved 8.41, 6.06 and 9.68 percent while the euro moved under one. This paper shows the structural reasons, no bell, no halt, a smaller market and a younger price, the three days on a chart and as bars beside the euro's, and how a broker answers the difference with margin, spread and the smallest lot. After reading it you can measure a day's range as a percent on any chart and read why a coin's Specification is set the way it is.

Crypto volatility, in five lines

Volatility is how far a price moves in a day, taken here as the day's high minus its low, divided by its open. On the three days 19 to 21 August 2026, bitcoin moved 8.41, 6.06 and 9.68 percent in this library's bars. The euro against the dollar moved 0.94, 0.35 and 0.37 percent on the same three days. The reasons are structural: no closing bell, no halt, a smaller market and a younger price. For a trader it means that one lot, the unit of size, which is one coin, carried 7,033.72 dollars of move on the Friday alone.

There is no bell

Picture the bell that is not there. A stock exchange has a bell: it rings at the open and the close, and when a share moves too fast a halt stops it for minutes. News that lands at night waits for the morning and arrives into an orderly opening. A coin has a ring instead, every hour of every day, and no halt. News lands on a live price at once, at three in the morning as readily as at noon, and the price moves as far as the next buyer or seller is from the last one. Add that the whole coin market is a fraction of the size of the currency market, so the same money moves it further, and that the price has a short history for anyone to measure it against.
