What Is the Volume Indicator

The volume indicator draws a bar under each candle as tall as that candle was busy, and on most brokers' charts the number is tick volume: a count of how many times the price changed while the candle formed. This paper shows you gold's busy and quiet days of 2025 drawn from real bars, the idea as a turnstile that clicks once for every person through, the bars under the daily chart, one day's count cut into its ninety-two quarter-hours, and the Volumes indicator and its colours on your platform.

A bar as tall as the candle was busy

The volume indicator draws a bar under each candle — one per day on a daily chart — as tall as that candle was busy. On most brokers' charts the number is tick volume: a count of how many times the price changed while the candle formed. Gold's 7 April 2025, the day it ranged 99 dollars, has a bar of 468,373. Its 18 July, a 29-dollar day, has a bar of 113,939. A tall bar is a busy day, a short bar a quiet one, and the height is a count, not a price.

A turnstile

The picture is a turnstile. It clicks once for every person who pushes through, and the counter on the wall shows the total. It does not know who went through, or which way they were heading, or what they carried; it only counts. Tick volume is that counter for a candle: one click for every time the price changed while the candle was forming. A candle that clicked 468,373 times was a busy one, and a candle that clicked 113,939 times was quiet, and that is the whole of what the bar says.
