What Is the Force Index

The force index is each day's change in the close times that day's volume — a big move on a busy day is a big push, a small move on a quiet day a small one — smoothed over thirteen days into a line. This paper shows you gold's daily pushes of 2025 drawn from real bars with the smoothed line over them, the idea as a sled where the push is distance times load, the line under the daily chart, one subtraction and one multiplication for a single day, and the dialog on your platform.

Each day's push

The force index is each day's push: the change in the close from the day before, times the day's volume. A rise of 98 dollars on a volume of 286,800, as gold made on 21 April 2025, is a push of +28 million in the platform's units; a fall of 53 on 468,373, as on 7 April, is −25 million. The platform draws a thirteen-day exponential average of those daily pushes, so the line is smooth where the bars are jagged, and the sign says whether the recent pushes have been mostly rises or mostly falls.

A sled pushed across snow

The picture is a sled being pushed across snow. How much work the push was is the distance the sled went times the load on it: a light sled pushed a long way, or a heavy one pushed a short way, can come to the same number. The force index is that sum for one day — the distance is the change in the close, the load is the volume — with the sign from the direction of the change. A big move on a quiet day and a small move on a busy day can be the same push.
