What Is the Chaikin Oscillator

The Chaikin oscillator is the gap between a three-day and a ten-day average of the accumulation/distribution line, a running total in which each day adds or subtracts a share of its volume according to where it closed in its own range. This paper shows you gold's running total and oscillator of 2025 drawn from real bars, the idea as a bottle for every day filled to where the day closed and sized by its volume, the bars under the daily chart, the arithmetic for one day, and the dialog on your platform.

A running total, and the gap between its two averages

The Chaikin oscillator is built in two steps. First a running total, the accumulation/distribution line: each day adds or subtracts a share of its volume according to where it closed in its own range — a close near the day's top adds most of the volume, a close near the bottom takes most of it away, a close in the middle adds nothing. Then MACD's arithmetic on that total: a three-day average minus a ten-day average, drawn as bars. On 22 April 2025 gold's read +275 thousand; on 18 July, +7.

A bottle for every day

The picture is a bottle for every day. Where the day closed in its own range sets how full the bottle is: a close at the top of the range fills it, a close at the bottom leaves it empty, a close in the middle half fills it. The day's volume sets how big the bottle is. Each bottle is poured into one running tank, the accumulation/distribution line, and the Chaikin oscillator is whether the tank has been filling faster over the last three days than over the last ten.
