What Is Swing Trading

Swing trading is trading at the scale of days to weeks: a trade held for one swing of the price, from one turn to the next, through the nights and weekends in between. This paper shows you gold's swing up of 544 dollars in eleven trading days and swing down of 379 in seventeen from real bars of April and May 2025, the idea as a rope swing, the two swings on the daily chart, the fifteen nights and two weekends the first swing carried, and the swap lines on your platform that price each night.

Two swings, from real bars

Swing trading is trading at the scale of days to weeks. Here are two swings from real daily bars, gold in April and May 2025. One went up: from the low of 2956.38 on 7 April to the high of 3499.96 on 22 April, 544 dollars in eleven trading days. The next went down: to 3120.62 on 15 May, 379 dollars in seventeen. A swing is the run between one turn and the next, and a swing trade is a trade held for one of them, through the nights and weekends in between.

A rope swing

Picture a rope swing. The seat goes from one turn to the other, one arc, and comes back. A swing trade rides one arc of the price: it goes in near one turn and comes out near the next, days or weeks later. It pays no attention to the wobble inside the arc, the hours and minutes a scalper lives in, because the arc is the thing, and an arc takes days. That is what separates swing trading from the two shorter kinds: not the market, the length of the ride.
