What Is Breakout Trading

A breakout is the price leaving a range it has been shut in, and breakout trading is the family of strategies that take the leaving as their cue. This paper shows you gold's eleven weeks between a floor of 3249 and a ceiling of 3454 in the summer of 2025 and the close of 1 September that went through, the idea as a cork from a bottle, two breaks on the daily chart, the 22 April spike that came back inside against the 1 September close that stayed out, and the line and alert that watch a ceiling on your platform.

Eleven weeks under a ceiling

A breakout is the price leaving a box it has been shut in. Here is one from real daily bars: gold from 16 June to 19 September 2025. For eleven weeks the price stayed between a floor of 3249.01 and a ceiling of 3453.88, the highest point of the summer; in 55 trading days no close got above 3449. On 1 September the close was 3476.02, 22 dollars over the ceiling, and by 30 September the price was at 3858.64. Breakout trading is the family of strategies that take the leaving of a box as their cue.

A cork from a bottle

Picture a cork in a bottle. Inside the bottle is the range: weeks of pressure with nowhere to go, the price pressing at the same ceiling again and again. Nothing in the bottle looks different on the last day before the cork goes, and that is what makes the leaving a cue rather than a forecast. A breakout strategy watches the cork, not the wine. The event it is built on is the price being outside the box, whatever the reason it went there.
