What Is a Wick Fill

A wick fill is the price coming back and trading through the prices a wick left behind. This paper shows you a real 147-pip wick and the two days that filled it, the fill measured day by day as a tank, the wick and its fill on the daily chart, the filling day opened into its hours, and how to keep a note of a wick's prices on your platform.

The wick and the fill

A wick is the thin line beyond a candle's body: prices the period reached and gave back before it closed. A wick fill is the price coming back later and trading through those prices again. On 7 April 2025 the euro against the dollar rose to 1.10497 and closed at 1.09023, an upper wick of 147 pips — a pip being the fourth decimal place, the smallest step most people count in. On 8 April the price climbed 61 per cent of the way back up the wick. On 9 April it went through all of it.

How full

A fill is measured from the top of the body to the tip of the wick, like a tank. On 7 April the tank was left empty: the day had reached those prices and left them. On 8 April the high of 1.09916 filled it 61 per cent of the way. On 9 April the high of 1.10948 went past the tip, and the tank was full — every price inside the wick had been traded at again. A wick can be part filled or filled; the word says how much of the band the price has come back through.
