Trading Sessions Explained

Your symbol does not move evenly through the day. On the Dow the busiest hour is nearly six times the size of the deadest one, and six hours out of twenty-four carry almost half the movement. This paper shows you how to find those hours on your own chart in about ten minutes, and what changes once you know them.

The skill

Your symbol moves when the people who trade it are at their desks. That is all a trading session is, and it makes the difference between hours enormous and completely predictable.

By the end of this paper you will have measured your own symbol's day from your own broker's history, and you will know which two hours are worth sitting in front of.

Step one — check your broker's clock

Every timestamp on your chart is the broker's server time, not yours. Most run two or three hours ahead of London. Open your platform, look at the clock in the Market Watch window, and compare it with the one on your wall.
