Backtesting & Statistics

What Is Forward Testing

Forward testing is taking the rule that passed a backtest, freezing it, and running it from a date onward on bars that have not happened yet, on a demo or small account, until there are enough trades to say something. This paper shows you forward testing in five lines; the idea as a line drawn through the calendar with seen bars behind it and unseen ahead; the example rule's backtest week and forward week on the euro in August 2026 on real hourly bars, 39.0 pips and then minus 56.7; the two answers as two bars; and the demo account in the Navigator where the forward test lives on your platform.

Forward testing in five lines

Forward testing is taking the rule that passed a backtest and running it from today onward, on bars that have not happened yet. The reason is simple: the backtest's bars had all been seen, and a rule can be bent to fit bars it has seen, knowingly or not; new bars cannot have been fitted to. It is run on a demo account or a small live one, on the same sheet with the same columns, until there are enough trades to say something, which is weeks at least and usually months. The example rule from the earlier papers made 39.0 pips on its backtest week, 17 to 21 August 2026, where a pip is the fourth decimal place of the price; on the week that followed, run forward, it lost 56.7.

A line drawn through the calendar

Picture a line drawn through the calendar. Behind it are the months the backtest ran on, bars that were seen, drawn with a solid edge. Ahead of it are the months that had not happened when the rule was written, empty and dashed. The rule is frozen at the line: not a number in it may change afterwards, because a rule adjusted in September has, in effect, seen September. If it does change, the line moves to today and the count starts again from zero. Everything to the right of the line is the forward test, and it fills in one bar at a time.
