What Is a Psychological Level

A psychological level is a price that people watch, talk about and wait for — 100,000 on bitcoin, parity on the euro — and because so many are watching, the price pauses near it, stops short of it and crosses it back and forth more than at an ordinary price. This paper shows you bitcoin's three months around 100,000 drawn from its turning points, the idea as a scoreboard every head is turned to, the number on the daily chart, the three near misses measured, and the Ticks tab on your platform for watching a number being approached.

Three months around one number

A psychological level is a price that people watch and wait for, and the watching shows on the chart. Bitcoin rose toward 100,000 dollars in November 2024 and stopped at 99,651 on 22 November, 349 short. It crossed the number for the first time on 5 December, fell back under it the next day, and for three months lived around it: up to 108,354 in December, back to a high of 99,941 on 26 December — 59 dollars short — and more turns just under it in February. Between 5 December and 28 February the daily close crossed the line ten times.

A scoreboard

The picture is a scoreboard. Every head in the stadium is turned to the same number, not because the game is decided there but because it is the number everyone reads. A psychological level is a price like that: 100,000 on bitcoin, parity on the euro, 3,000 on gold. It is talked about and printed in headlines, and because so many people are waiting to see it crossed, the price pauses and turns near it more than the arithmetic alone would explain.
